Not Only Smoking Area offers a methodology to map the emotional trajectory of a group or community, in this case the artists’ fellow students. The diagram presented collective moments such as turning points, celebrations, crisis, meals, or emotional breakdowns, and shares these with a wider audience. The installation gives a glimpse of the precarious conditions of the artists within bigger collective working. It shows acts of self-positioning, the search for commonality, disagreements, negotiations, solidarity and gossip. The lines particularly reflect the complex working process of a group that shares common goals, such as getting a degree, finding funds, or simply exploring a new country.
